DPD Alert Be Watchful of Recent Scams

I heard from a friend a few minutes ago that there’s also a Duke Energy scam happening–happened to her but she didn’t take the bait.  Someone came to the door of her business and said that DE was going to cut off her power unless she called another number and made a payment.

I hope people will understand that bottom line–the IRS, Duke Energy, telephone companies, cable companies, local/state/federal governments do not communicate via phone for serious situations.

In speaking with the Sheriff’s Office, they are aware of the scam as many residents have been contacted in this matter.

Please be aware that these scams are going on and law enforcement is never going to ask you stay on the phone and give out your personal account information.

If you think that it might be a scam of have questions, feel free to give us a call to check.

District 3 Investigators obtained warrants on Amari Carver, Jayquantay Allen and Gregory Logan charging them with Felony Breaking and Entering, Felony Larceny after the Break and Enter and Felony Conspiracy. These three suspects broke into a residence on Kingsmount Court. District 3 Patrol Officers responded to that residence in reference to a break-in in progress. Upon arrival, the first responding officer saw a Silver Toyota in front of the house. The car was running and a door was opened. The officer went around to the rear of the and saw that the door had been kicked in. So he went inside and encountered these three suspects and a fight ensued. The suspect were able to get away by jumping through a glass window. However to get to their getaway car they had to pass the police car which was parked (Strategically) directly in front of their vehicle with its cameras activated and recording. We were able to use this evidence to bring these three to justice. They are now residents of the Durham County Jail awaiting trial.

Please secure your garages before leaving your homes or turning in for the night and don’t forget to set your alarms.

That’s all for now, until next time stay safe.

DPD Guidance on Calling 911 vs Non-Emergency

There seems to be some confusion and hesitation about when to call 911…lots of people have emailed me recently to ask when or what constitutes a 911 call versus a non-emergency call…so in order to clear it all up and because I know you’re all wondering, I’m gonna give you the skinny on the whole deal. This is exciting stuff folks, so put a pillow on the floor just in case you fall off the edge of your seat.

Here we go…if you see something HAPPENING that you think needs Police attention NOW (or for that matter, anything that falls under “Emergency Services” such as Police, Fire or EMS) then 911 is appropriate. The basic idea is to ask yourself if what you’re seeing is “In-Progress.” If it is in progress…call 911.

Now…if the situation is clearly NOT an emergency or the incident is not currently in progress, then dialing the Non-Emergency line is appropriate (560-4600). That’s why it’s called the Non-Emergency line…nifty huh?

Examples of 911 calls can include:

Car wrecks

Any medical emergency

A break-in to your home (and you don’t know if anyone is inside)

A break-in to your home while YOU’RE inside!

Seeing someone stealing, about to steal, or break-in to something

Fights (doesn’t apply to animals, does apply to Kung-Fu)

Anybody with a gun (cept us of course!)

Any sighting of Chuck Norris (cause someone is about to get hurt)

Gunshots

Suspicious activity (make sure to tell 911 exactly what’s suspicious about what you see)

Your house is on fire

My house is on fire

Anybodys house is on fire

Fire in general

If you’ve fallen and can’t get up

If I’ve fallen and I can’t get up!

On second thought; A Chuck Norris sighting… nothing we can do. Best not to intervene. It is after all…Chuck Norris.

Now…this is not even a drop in the bucket so don’t limit yourself to any list out there, because there are here are so many situations that can and would apply. Use good judgment and if you still have doubt, call 911. You can’t go wrong….we’ll figure it out when we get there.

Now…for the non-emergency stuff…

The Non-Emergency number for the Durham Police is 560-4600.

Basically… anything that you might need the police for….but it’s not a “ShaZaaam!” moment, it’s NOT in progress and it doesn’t endanger life or property. It’s more of a “Well, the police should probably know whats going on here, but there’s no rush.”

Some examples are:

A dent to your car in the parking lot.

A stolen mower, weed wacker, whack-a-mole game, wilted wieeping willow, or other property (something that might have gotten stolen out of your shed for example) and the bad guy is long gone

A minor crime that occurred days ago or even hours ago

A car break-in (not in progress)

Identity fraud (not in progress)

Police advice

When not to call us at all…..

When your order at Mickey-D’s is not really “Your way.”

When you forget your anniversary. ..again…and you were married Christmas day, her birthday or Halloween… (you’re on your own fellas).

Cat in a tree (it will come down eventually.. .after all, who’s ever seen a cat skeleton in a tree?)

Dog in a tree…call me directly. Gotta see that.

Clowns… your discretion….they creep me out too.

Aliens…when aliens from Mars, in possession of an Illudium PU 36 Explosive Space Modulator, lands in the city park and start vaporizing people into cosmic dust…it may be an emergency, but trust me…I ain’t coming.

Just to say “Hi Police!”

When Victor finds out Adam is secretly conspiring against Ashley to make her think she’s losing her mind and to make her think she’s pregnant, but we all know she’s really not, except for Victor…who can’t see the truth because he hates Jack, and Jack is worrying about Gloria scheming as usual and Jack and Victor are worrying about that crazy Mary Jane and kitty cat….Mary Jane wants kill Jack and Victor and stuff the new cat…or marry Jack…depends on the moment. Now, Mary Jane might ought to think about calling 911 for that spider bite…that might be appropriate. ….and she could if she hadn’t have stomped on the cell phone Not that I watch Y&R…it’s just what I hear…honest. .. you know, word on the street and all.

To find out the weather or road conditions…instead, just watch Don “Big Weather” Schwenneker on WTVD….if Big Weather says “TarNader is a comin”…grab Dorothy and the dog and get in the cellar…cause a TarNader is a comin!

You want directions…

Lost cell phones (No need to report it to anyone but your insurance company. Also, how did you call?)

Lost wallet

Lost dogs

Lost cats

Lost love

Lost keys

Lost re-runs

Los Alamos

Las Vegas…what happens in Vegas…stays in Vegas…unless you put it on Facebook, Instagram or Snapchat.

Now…if you have something that comes up and are confused or that you wonder about or have ANY DOUBT at all…repeat after me…. Call 911….you cant go wrong.

DPD-Suspicious Vehicle Alert

Greetings;

The vehicle pictured below is a vehicle we believe was involved in a burglary on Reynolds Avenue that happened today between the hours of 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.. As you can see it is occupied in this picture by what appears to be one black male. We think that the driver drops the suspect off at a house and then goes back to pick them up after the burglary.

If you see this vehicle DO NOT try to stop it!! Call 911 immediately. These guys should be considered very dangerous.

DPD Updates on PAC-3 Break-ins 2016

Good Afternoon-

This year, there have been 41 total First Degree Burglaries (a break-in when someone is at home) city-wide (23 in District 3) where cars car keys were stolen and the victims car was stolen.  The trend shows that the burglaries occurred Monday- Friday between the hours of 3 and 5am usually when the victims were sleeping.  We are actively investigating with other districts involved.

That being said, when you are going to bed, please make sure that all of your first floor windows and all sliding and exterior doors are secured.

We are continuing to work with apartment complexes and communities to effect a strategy to abate these crimes.  If you would like a safety review of your property, please contact Officer Mock at Lawanda.mock@durhamnc.gov and she would be happy to schedule it.

If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact me.

DPD Criminal Investigation Weekly Newsletter

Greetings;

In the past month there have been 7 break-ins in the surrounding Hope Valley area.  Recently, as per my newsletters, we have been looking for a possible suspect vehicle that was described as a Red SUV.  We believe that that vehicle was recovered on Surry Rd. yesterday thanks to a vigilant resident. Further investigation revealed that the vehicle was stolen from a neighborhood in Northern Durham. It should also be noted that the keys were in the vehicle and the windows were down which led us to believe that the suspects were still be in the area. We waited and watched the vehicle for a while but no one came back to the SUV. Uniform Patrol Officers walked the area and checked for break-ins but fortunately none were found. That being said we ask that any and all suspicious activity be reported to 911.  We will happily send an officer out to check the situation.  We do not have additional information on suspects at this time but we will continue to investigate and patrol accordingly.

Take care and be safe!!!

Increase in Durham Motor Vehicle Thefts

The Durham Police Department wants you to be aware of a recent  increase in motor vehicle thefts. During the month of August 80 vehicles were stolen in Durham, up nearly 60 percent from the previous month. In 30 of those cases owners left their car unattended with the engine running or their keys in an unlocked car.

On average, over the last five years, 49 cars are stolen per month.

Durham police are providing the following vehicle theft prevention and safety tips:

  • Don’t leave your car unlocked
  • Never leave your car running, especially while it is unattended or unlocked
  • Do not leave a spare key near your vehicle
  • Park in your garage or well-lit and highly visible areas whenever possible
  • Do not leave valuables in your vehicle, but if you must, make sure the items aren’t visible
  • Use common sense and trust your instincts

Anyone with information about stolen vehicles  is asked to call CrimeStoppers at (919) 683-1200. CrimeStoppers pays cash rewards for information leading to arrests in felony cases and callers never have to identify themselves.

District 3 Crime Investigations Weekly New Letter

Greetings;

This is the District 3 Criminal Investigations weekly newsletter.

 Mitchell S. Battle 9/29/82
MitchellBattle_92

District 3 Investigators obtained warrants on Mitchell S. Battle charging him with Felony Breaking and Entering, Felony Larceny after Breaking and Entering, Injury to Real Property, Second Degree Trespass and Felony Safecracking. These charges stemmed from a recent burglary at the Durham Coop Market located at 1111 W. Chapel Hill Street. This investigation is ongoing. Mr. Battle was arrested and transported to the Durham County Jail on August 11, 2016 and was placed under a $10,000 bond which he promptly posted.

There has been a spike in burglaries in the Hope Valley community during the last week. There have been five burglaries, most were forced entry with the back door being kicked in but there have been some where the suspects made entry through an unlocked sliding door or an open window. The times of these burglaries are really sporadic for instance this week we have seen them happen between the hours of 2:00 P.M. and 4:30 P.M. then there was a burglary that occurred after 10:00 P.M. where the resident heard a noise went downstairs to investigate and saw the suspect leaving the house. By way of crime prevention tips, it is always a good idea to leave a light on downstairs before turning in for the night, lock all your doors, if you have cameras make sure they are working and lock your windows and place your alarm on the stay mode. We are looking for a black male about 5’10 to 6 foot, 150 to 170 lbs. We know that he gets out of a Red SUV (unknown make or model) and he walks up to the residence that we think he has identified earlier and rings the bell two or three times. If no one answers he goes around the back and kicks the door in and enters the residence and ransacks the house. The suspect steals jewelry, money, electronics and car keys.

We don’t think this guy(s) is someone we have dealt with in the past because his methodology, technique or procedure is very different. This suspect is very rushed and careless during these crimes. We also know that this suspect appears to prefer houses that are close to the wood lines or yards with a large amount of foliage in order to hide from police. With that said, I expect that this guy will be hearing from us in the very near future. However, until that time, trim your trees and cut back your bushes in your yards. This will make your home safer and discourage bad guys from making your home a target. And please use your alarms when you leave your homes.

There has been a rise in Break-ins to Motor Vehicles so far since last Saturday (8-6-16) there has been a total of 27 vehicle break-ins throughout the district. The majority of these vehicles were found unlocked and each had personal items of value in plain view. These vehicle break-ins are occurring usually after 10:00 P.M. and the suspect(s) are walking through neighborhoods pulling doors and making entry. So far the only description of the suspect we have is a slim (very skinny) black male wearing a gray hoodie and dark athletic pants. Items taken have been money, electronics, lap-tops and I-Phones all of which were left in view of the suspect(s). Please make sure you secure your valuables by either putting them in the glove box, under your seat or even better in the trunk of the car and make sure you lock your car before leaving it.

Finally, call 911 if you see suspicious vehicles, persons or activities in your neighborhood and let us come and check it out.

Don’t become an easy target…protect yourselves and your valuables!!

It’s great to be back!!!

Until next time…stay safe!!!

Missing Newspapers

For the past two days, my daily paper has not been in my driveway. When I called the delivery person, he assured me he had delivered the newspapers both days, between
4 am-5 am. He commented that he saw a small SUV parked at the corner of Bexley and Oxford, which seems odd for that time of day, so I passed that information on to the police. Please stay aware and report any unusual or suspicious activity to the police.
