National Night Out 2017 Round-Up

 

We are proud to invite all University Estate Durham neighbors and friends to this year’s NNO Round-Up themed celebration.  Corral you little buckaroos and come meet your neighbors as we promote community safety and awareness against crime on Tuesday August 1.

This will be a pot-luck event so all neighbors are encouraged to bring their favorite entree or side dish to share with your community members and public safety responders.  Drinks will be provided at the event.

We will have a special food guest this year as we present free to you “The Parlour” food bus.  The Parlour has been scooping the most delicious handmade ice cream in their downtown location since 2013.

More event details will be announced.

Volunteer and Donations:
Our NNO event is successful each year due to the hours of volunteer work before and during the event. We will be in need of some volunteers during the event if you can help. Look for the volunteer sign-up slots when you RSVP.

4th Annual Spring Cleanup Day, April 22, Earth Day

and join neighbors for our 4th annual Spring Clean-up on Earth Day, Saturday, April 22:

WHY:
As part of Keep Durham Beautiful, we value our neighborhood environment and want to keep it as safe, clean and attractive as possible for our community.

WHEN:
We are starting  on Saturday, the 22nd  of April at 9:30 AM and finish by no later than mid afternoon that day.

WHO IS INVITED:
This is a community event. Adults and supervised children are all welcome

HOW THIS WORKS:
Join your neighbors along your street and walk your area, picking up trash.  We plan to respect our neighbors’ yards and keep to the street and the area of city property along the street. For particular problem areas, you are welcome to join others in a larger team to work together.  For particular concerns or problems you encounter, please bring those to the attention of your neighborhood watch co-coordinators or block captain. Particular areas of focus are greenways connecting streets, Princeton block between Oxford and Hope Valley, and Oxford Drive Block 3000 to University along Epworth Church.

WHAT EQUIPMENT IS NEEDED:
o   Bring Blue bags for glass and plastic recyclables.

o   Bring Dark brown or green jumbo trash bags for paper/other trash.

HOW LONG SHOULD THIS TAKE:
There is no time limit and this one day event runs  from 9:30AM mid afternoon; you may take as little or long as you like; set your own hours.  Whatever works.

WHAT TO WEAR/HOW TO DRESS:
Sunscreen; Comfortable, loose-fitting work clothing; a hat or visor; Garden gloves recommended.

Let’s Make our Mailboxes Festive for Holidays

The holidays are fast approaching. Let’s get festive!  

You are invited and encouraged to decorate your street mailboxes in the spirit of friendly competition as all decorated mailboxes will be displayed on the website!

Let’s be creative, involve the kids, bring out the kid in every adult, and add some holiday cheer to our community and our neighborhood mail carriers.

Simple rules.

  • Mailbox decorations should not interfere with mail carrier delivery.
  • Your wonderful creations need to be up by the week before Christmas and
  • Decorations will photographed and posted on the website.

Annual Halloween Costume Parade This Coming October 30

Our annual neighborhood costume parade and potluck is scheduled for Sunday, October 30th at 4:00 PM. Please meet at the dead end of Oxford Dr. (opposite end from Epworth) at 4:00 PM to start the parade!

We’ll parade to the Bexley cul de sac to enjoy some food and fun. Please bring a dish to share (feel free to drop it off in the Bexley cul de sac before the parade!) and chairs if you’d like!

Please pass the word to others in the neighborhood who may not be in this group. Spectators along the parade route are also encouraged!

We could use some tables for setting up the food! If you’ve got one or have other questions/ideas/offers of help please contact:

Our National Night Out Potluck Luau is coming up fast and we are excited. Not only are we going to have a fun time but we will get to enjoy some slightly cooler weather as well. Yeah!

We look forward to spending our time meeting our new neighbors, giving thanks to our visiting first responders, seeing familiar faces and of course having a Big Island Hawaiian Shaved Ice.   Did we mention that the shaved ice servings are free for all thanks to a private donation from one of your neighbors!!

And  don’t forget the special entertainment we have lined up from one of the best jugglers in the country, Chris Fowler (aka JuggleBoy).

All Interested In Being Block Captain Join Us For Upcoming Meeting

Hello neighbors,

Just a reminder to those interested in being a Crime Watch Block Captain, we are having our quarterly Block Captain Meeting at Epworth Church Meeting Room on the First floor. This next Tuesday, 12 July, from 6:30 PM-7:30PM. Please join us.

Entry is via the parking lot entrance between Hope Valley and Oxford Drive. Signs will direct you to room.

Your street’s Block Captain is also available to answer any questions. Your Block Captain is also listed on  the website contacts page for your block, and clicking on their name will take you right to their email.

Pull out your hula shirts and spruce up those grass skirts as it is near time for the 2016 National Night Out neighborhood get-together.  This year we are promoting NNO “Big Island” style with the NNO neighborhood potluck luau.

We will gather on Tuesday, August 2nd at the Epworth Church Pavilion from 6:30 – 8:30 PM

Come meet your new and long time neighbors to help make your neighborhood strong against crime.

Food/Drink:
Neighbors are requested to bring either an entree dish or a side dish to the potluck luau to share with your neighbors.  Lemonade/water refreshments and chips will be provided**.

Entertainment
We have some special entertainment for our luau that we know you will enjoy.

Come taste the many flavors of the Big Island Hawaii Shaved Ice food truck that will be serving over 21 different flavors of Hawaiian shaved ice.

We are not done yet.  We are thrilled this year to bring you the mastery juggling skills of JuggleBoy! (aka Chris Fowler).  You may have seen JuggleBoy on a weekend at SouthPoint Mall entertaining the crowds or even on a TV commercial for the SC Lottery.

  • Chris is a co-world record holder in juggling.
  • Placed as the #1 ranked U.S. juggler on ESPN.
  • Over 15 years of experience entertaining family events.

And as always Durham’s Fire Department will bring their shining fire truck for the kids to visit.

Block Captain and NNO Volunteer Meeting Upcoming–Join Us

Hello neighbors,

BCMeeting Invite_08Jun2016Your Block Captain watch team meets four times a year, and invites those interested in being a Block Captain  to our upcoming meeting Tuesday, the 12 July at Epworth Church (3002 Hope Valley Road), 1st  floor meeting room, starting at 6:30 PM to 7:30PM. You will have an opportunity to meet current block captains, as well as be given information on the role of the watch co-coordinators and block captains in our community crime watch program. The Epworth parking lot and church is easily accessed right off of the 3000 block of Oxford Drive.

As a bonus, and immediately following the block captain meeting, we will be having a second National Night Out 2016 volunteer meeting for those interested in helping out at this annual event, starting at 7:30PM-8:30PM. This year’s event has a great theme and promises a surprise or two. Volunteers are needed.
